Built on Drugs (Jardine House)

1 comment:

  1. William Jardine, a surgeon working in East India Company ships is the founder of the Hong Kong conglomerate Jardine, Matheson & Co. dated back 1843. A company which made its fortune by shipping tea and silk from China to England and selling opium to Chinese in return. Qing emperor bans the opium trade and Jardine doesn't like this a bit who then cries to the British king resulting in the first Opium War. They are all legit now with real estate, hotel and other ventures but the fact remains that Jardine, Matheson & Co. is a commercial empire built on drugs.
